Sport climbing and skateboarding and other extreme sports were competitive sports at the Tokyo Olympics 2020; the sport climbing medal events at Paris 2024 have been increased. The two sports are gradually becoming mainstream international sport. To align related sports facilities in Taiwan with international standards, the Sports Administration has compiled the “Reference Illustrations for Planning and Design of Sports Climbing and Skateboarding Competition Venues”; venue construction cost analysis, environment planning, safety standards and related illustrations are provided as reference for local government when planning the construction of related venues. They can also be used as reference for venue assessment and hardware establishment when guiding operators interested in getting involved in related industry.
These competition venue planning principles and design reference illustrations were set in accordance with international level competition standards and design plans that were collected. In accordance with the “Sports Administration’s Reference Illustrations for Sports Facility Specification and Classification” venue classification methods, reference principles for graded establishment of sport climbing and skateboarding venues in Taiwan are put forward. There is also simulated planning of a 3,000 seat venue and allocation of construction budget, including warmup and competition venue, spectator seats, media broadcast area… and other necessary sports facilities, and also planning of the flow lines of six types of sports event groups (athletes, judges, media, VIP, administrative staff and spectators) to serve as reference when sports venues are renovated or built in future.
With the aim of promoting participation by all, these illustrations also put forward reference principles for leisure or training venue establishment. Sport climbing is divided into five grades by age, namely, nursery school, elementary school, junior and senior high school, university and college and club as well as, sports training center, with different climbing wall types and suggested heights. Skateboarding separates beginner and intermediate riders through difficulty of facilities; street venues have props of different difficulty level, while park bowl venues are made up of linked circles of various height and types. These can serve as the reference principles for design units.
The Sports Administration said that the illustrations are nearing the completion and acceptance stage and it is expected they will be available on the Sports Administration website（http://www.sa.gov.tw）for downloading from August this year by interested parties; in future, design specialization for different sports will be continue to be formulated to ensure they meet international standards and increase the competitive power of Taiwan’s athletes.
