2008 Annual Report on Physical Education Statistics

 Our department, since established in the 62th year of the ROC, though encountering change in society and organization, has mainly been focusing on physical education development in schools, putting many efforts in promoting exercise in school, improving physical abilities of students, and cultivating lifelong exercising habits and ability of appreciating sports in students for the past 30 years. Since the 93th year of the ROC, we have widely collected basic information of school physical education equipment constructions, class development, team establishment, and human resources condition in all level schools in the country, providing information for academic research and government actions, checking and drafting physical education policies. We have specially entrusted the Physical Education Research and Development Center of National Taiwan Normal University to carry out research on physical education in all level schools in the country, presenting complete information after objective and constructive research. These statistics are collected by internet surveys, dating to November of the 97th year of the ROC, and collected and registered by related personnel in schools. In total, 4228 schools responded to the survey and the percentage of response was 100%. In the annual report for this year, apart from the earlier contents of curriculum and education, sport activities and teams, professional physical personnel, and exercise equipment and facilities, we have added physical conditions to the categories of research, hoping to receive complete and comprehensive information by editing the contents of the survey, presenting complete information after objective and constructive research. The results can serve as reference materials for future academic research and government policy decision and administration.
Note:
Concerning the establishment and management of sports teams in the 96th and 97th year of the ROC, difference in the calculating of proportion of school participation is shown in formulas below.
Year 96:
School participation = number of schools that attended interschool contests  number of schools that have established school representative sport teams (formula 1)
Year 97:
School participation = number of schools that attended interschool contests  number of schools of the same level in the country (formula 2)
Formula 1 illustrates the proportion percentage of participation of one specific sport with the schools that practice this sport. Formula 2 shows the proportion percentage of participation of the specific sport with the number of schools of the same level in the country (without concerning a specific sport).
Due to difference between the definitions, to know the proportion percentage eagerness of participation of one representing team of one specific sport with all the other teams of all school, formula 1 is more appropriate. To know the popularity of one specific sport in all level schools in the country, formula 2 is better.
