Taiwan Athletics Open 2016 Attracted World's Elite Track & Field Athletes
The Taiwan Athletics Open 2016 was held from May 19-20 at the Taoyuan Stadium. A total of 195 athletes from 24 nations participated in this year's competition, many of them among the world's elite track & field stars. The most heralded athlete is 2012 London Olympics women's triple jump gold medalist Olga Rypakova from Kazakhstan. Members of our nation's Olympic training team ‒ men's javelin ace Huang Shih-feng, hurdling star Chen Jie, the prince of high jump Hsiang Chun-hsien, and up-and-coming speedster Yang Chun-han ‒ went head-to-head with the world's top track & field stars.
Taiwan has been holding the Taiwan Athletics Open almost every year since 1972 and it has become our nation's highest level track & field competition. This year's event marks the 41st Taiwan Athletics Open, and in addition to Asian nations, acclaimed athletes from Europe and the U.S. were invited to take part. The queen of triple jump Olga Rypakova was the runner-up at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, champion at both the Doha 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, and the 2012 London Olympic women's triple jump gold medalist. The people of Taiwan had an epic opportunity to see this Olympic gold medalist display her skills. Men's javelin thrower Oleksandr Pyatnytsya from Ukraine won the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and competed with our countrymen Huang Shih-feng and Cheng Chao-tsun for the gold. The 2014 World Relay Championships men's 4x400m relay gold medalist Clayton Parros from the U.S., 2013 Moscow World Championships men's 4x400m relay silver medalist Akheem Gauntlett from Jamaica, and men's 4x200 2014 World Relay Championship gold medalist Jermaine Brown from Jamaica were among the superstar lineup competing with our nation's speedsters.
Taiwan currently has 7 track & field athletes qualifying for the Rio Olympics, that's the largest track & field delegation our nation has ever fielded. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has authorized the points earned at this year's Taiwan Athletics Open to count towards qualifying for the Rio Olympics. We look forward to more of our athletes earning their qualifying berths right here in front of their family and friends, advancing to the Rio Olympics together. There will be 16 men and women athletes from our Olympic training team participating in this competition. Women's long-distance runners Chen Yu-hsuan and Hsieh Chien-ho have already qualified for the Rio Olympics marathon event and will participate in this year's 5000m event as they get tuned up for their upcoming Olympics appearance. Our other Olympic qualifying athletes are men's high jumper Hsiang Chun-hsien, men's javelin thrower Huang Shih-feng, and men's 400m hurdler Chen Jie. We hope they will make the most of our home field advantage and shine with their best performances. The up-and-coming speedster Yang Chun-han, javelin thrower Cheng Chao-tsun, veteran shot putter Chang Ming-huang, and the men's 400m relay team will still be striving to earn Olympic qualifying berths. We anticipate that going up against world-class competition will propel our nation's athletes on to reach their goals.
The Taiwan Athletics Open 2016 was jointly sponsored by the Chinese Taipei Track & Field Association (CTTFA) and the Taoyuan City Government. Assisting sports associations and local governments bid for major international sports events and broadening our athletes and spectators horizons is one of the Sports Administration's most important policy initiatives. Every year Taiwan's track & field enthusiasts get the chance to watch the world's best athletes compete, and as a nation, we gain experience holding international sports events. These experiences will be key to our success in hosting the 2017 Universiade.

「安全玩水 in宜蘭」記者會,何署長親自宣導安全水上活動

“Safe Water Fun in Ilan” Press Release Advocates Water Activity Safety
Since the first student drowning incident over the 228 Holiday this February (2016) up to now there have been 8 student drowning incidences (5 fatalities and 3 injuries). Of the 8 drowning incidences this year 5 occurred while playing in the ocean and 3 occurred while playing on Ilan’s coastal beaches. All of these incidences involved students visiting Ilan from other places and it would seem apparent that these tourists incurred accidents because they were unaware of the local sea floor topography and marine features.
According to the Sports Administration’s “2005-2015 Student Drowning Fatalities Incident Analysis Report” drowning incidences predominantly occur over student holidays and vacation time, especially summer vacation, Saturdays and Sundays, and following exams. The Sports Administration urges schools to reinforce advocacy efforts to inform students about the potential dangers of water activities and teach water safety concepts “before vacation starts.” Parents should also be aware of their children’s holiday plans and urge them to seek out destinations that provide safe water activity environments where safety equipment and lifeguards are present. That way students will have a fun and safe time. If students do encounter a drowning accident, they should absolutely under no circumstance risk their life by entering the water in attempts to save someone. The correct response that should be taken in the event a drowning accident does occur is “save oneself” and “save others."
1) "Save Oneself": When taking part in water activities, if you incur any kind of trauma injury or muscle cramping the first thing you should do is stay calm and find a way to get back on shore. If you do feel compromised or find yourself in a predicament, then you should raise your arms and call for help, treading water, floating, or resting on a flotation device (or driftage) while you wait for rescue. Research data indicates that floating on the water surface while waiting to be rescued will save energy over the long haul, thus increasing your chance of being rescued and averting the tragic outcome of a drowning fatality.
2) "Save Others": If you come across someone who is drowning you should immediately shout for help and call the police to report the incident. Next, you should extend a long object such as a piece of bamboo, wood, or clothing; throw out a rope or flotation device (object) such as a ball; or paddle over on a large buoyant object such as a boat, piece of driftwood, life preserver, or Styrofoam so you can try to rescue the drowning person. It is imperative that you always remember these fundamental principles: “It’s better to rescue someone from shore than it is to get in the water;” “It’s better to rescue someone with a device than it is by hand;” and “It’s better to have a team rescue someone than it is for one person.”
