The 2014 WDC Professional Ballroom Dance Championship—Asian Dance Tour Taipei Open was held at the Taipei Arena on 28th February. Ballroom dancing combines an entertaining combination of strength, coordination, and aesthetics and has always been among the most favorite sports of Taiwanese people. With total prize money of US$100,000 and the World Dance Council (WDC) recognizing this event as a World Ranking Series level competition, the Open attracted 284 participants from 31 countries, including 24 of the world's top ranked professional modern dance and Latin dance dancers. The competition would undoubtedly be as exciting and action-packed as anticipated.

The schools are eligible to sign up and apply for allowances covering 80% of the ticket price, 50% of the transportation and insurance fees, 50% to 100% of the expense for any props or materials used to pump up the atmosphere while cheering for the competitors (only for spectator sports events), and 80% of miscellaneous expenses. A listing of the 2014 sanctioned events can be found at the Sports Industry Information and Assistance website (http://sports.bestmotion.com) or by contacting the Sports Administration's Sports Services Industry Office (Tel: +886-2-25030258).

SH150—Encouraging Students to Exercise 150 minutes at School Each Week

Amendments to the National Sports Act were promulgated on 11th December 2013. Among those amendments was Article 6 Paragraph 1 which stipulates that Schools at the High School Level and Below and the First Three Years of a Five-year Technical School Must Make Arrangements for Students, Outside of Physical Education Classes, to Participate in a Minimum of 150 Minutes Per Week of Daily Sports and Exercise Activities at School. In response to this amendment the Sports Administration is promoting the SH150 (Sport & Health 150 Minutes) Plan with the goal of "students becoming adept in at least one sport," "improving physical fitness: by 2021 the proportion of students with moderate physical fitness reaching 60%," and "the proportion of students who regularly exercise reaching 90%."

In addition to advancing special projects such as the popularization of sports, promotion of physical fitness, enhancement of physical education teachers, sports volunteers, and Lohas Sports Stations in elementary and middle schools, starting from the second semester of the 2013 academic year the Sports Administration hopes that secondary and primary schools will take into consideration differences in geography and climate, school facilities, and the unique characteristics of each campus to arrange exercise time for students either in the morning, during recess or after school, establish after school sports clubs, and utilize flexible curricula and integrative activity times to organize sports activities, hold class sports competitions on campus, and promote interesting and creative activities such as gymnastics, rope skipping, and jogging to spark students' interest in getting involved in sports on their own initiative.
